Hello Lu, how would you define your design/creative style?
Hello everyone, I’m designer Lu Yang. Generally speaking, I don’t define my design style. But if I had to describe it, I would say it leans towards geometric, colorful, and vibrant.
How have your personal experiences or personality influenced your design style?
My personal journey started with studying painting as an undergraduate and later transitioning to fashion design in graduate school. This shift from two-dimensional painting to three-dimensional design has helped me explore and develop my own style, which often incorporates elements of three-dimensionalism.
How is your design style reflected in your work?
My design style is primarily inspired by lifestyle and is expressed through the relationships between color blocks and hues in my work.
As a designer, have you ever experienced creative block? If so, how do you regain inspiration? If not, how do you maintain a strong creative drive?
I believe that creative bottlenecks happen in the design process, but inspiration always comes from life itself. Unless life becomes dull and lacks new experiences, creativity won’t run dry. Since life is constantly moving forward, I rarely feel uninspired.
What is your understanding of home design? How do you define "comfort" in home design?
I think comfort in home design comes from whether a design meets a person’s basic physical needs. Compared to fashion design, which I previously worked on, home design is much more complex, requiring a broader range of considerations such as ergonomics and psychology. To me, comfort isn’t just about physical ease but also about emotional well-being.
How do you incorporate your personal style into home design?
I usually incorporate distinctive elements such as colors and geometric shapes into my home design.
What makes a good home rug design, in your opinion?
A well-designed home rug should not only provide physical comfort but also enhance a space’s functionality and cater to people’s emotional needs. As lifestyles evolve, so do people’s needs. A truly great design adapts to the market while addressing the psychological aspects of daily life.
How do you balance creativity and commercial viability?
I believe the key is to seamlessly bridge exceptional artistry with commercial accessibility—bringing extraordinary art into everyday commerce while allowing business to uplift creative expression.
What were your first thoughts when you saw Lany Space rugs?
How would you describe our brand's style and characteristics?
When I first saw your rug designs, I felt an immediate sense of connection. You use a lot of dopamine-inducing colors, which directly resonate with people's inner worlds. This is something I also prioritize in my designs. I believe that design should go beyond aesthetics—it should also fulfill emotional needs. We share a common vision in this regard, aiming to bring joy and comfort through color and design. Personally, I love cozy, uplifting rugs, and Lany Space embodies both of these qualities!
Can you share your experience working with Lany Space? Compared to other collaborations, what made this one special or memorable?
Working with Lany Space was incredibly smooth, enjoyable, and easy to communicate. We started by focusing on specific patterns, then explored different angles to design and refine the rugs before bringing them to market. The entire process felt harmonious, like we were in sync the whole time. This collaboration allowed us to create rugs that bring comfort and joy, and I truly believe customers will feel that connection.
Compared to my previous collaborations, this one felt more theme-driven and stylistically distinct. Having a clear direction reduced communication barriers and allowed me greater creative freedom. The trust and space you provided me as a designer is something I deeply appreciate—it’s a level of respect that makes a real difference in the creative process.
As an Asian designer, how do you cater to Western consumers’ aesthetics in your designs?
By leading lifestyle trends! I integrate elements of Asian culture into Western artistic living spaces.
Can you share the story and concept behind your Lany Space rug collection? What inspired this series?
The story behind this collection is all about hugs.
Many of the rug designs feature animals hugging each other, representing warmth, comfort, and emotional connection. In today’s world, I believe our hearts need to feel fulfilled, and we should learn to embrace those around us. Loving the people in our lives is essential because love has the power to overcome any challenge. That’s why I designed this collection around the theme of hugs—to remind everyone to never forget to hug and cherish the ones they love every single day.
Among the rugs in this collection, which one is your personal favorite and why?
I love them all! Each piece is crafted with deep thought and passion, making them all special in their own way.
Bold and energetic, this tiger rug embodies Lu Yang’s artistic vision. The vivid green background makes the hand-drawn tiger come alive, while the signature “王” character on its forehead adds a striking touch of Eastern symbolism rarely seen in Western interiors.
